# Your Google Hours Field Is Worth More Than Your Last Ad Campaign: What 2026 Search Data Shows for NYC Restaurants

QUICK ANSWER

Restaurants that update their Google hours even once average 177 daily search views. Those that never touch the field average 42. Yet 43 percent of operators update hours only a few times a year. New 2026 data shows the cheapest fix in local search is the one most restaurants skip.

![Person checking restaurant opening hours on a phone on a Manhattan sidewalk at night](https://mychef.social/hubfs/Google%20hours%20of%20NYC%20restaurants.jpg)

There is a version of restaurant marketing that costs nothing, takes fifteen minutes a week, and outperforms a boosted post. It is unglamorous enough that almost nobody does it properly, which is exactly why it still works. Marqii published its 2026 industry report on September 10, built from location level engagement data across thousands of restaurant locations plus an operator survey. The headline finding is blunt. The field with the largest measured effect on guest action is your business hours, and it is among the least maintained.

## **What the data actually found**

| **Behavior** | **Average daily search views** | **Direction requests** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Never updates Google hours | 42 | 3 |
| Updates hours at least once | 177 | Not reported separately |
| Top quartile of update activity | Nearly 300 | 23 |

A restaurant in the top quartile of update activity is being seen roughly seven times as often as one that never touches the field, and getting about eight times the direction requests. Direction requests matter more than views because someone asking for walking directions to your door has already decided. The gap between that and behavior is the opportunity. Marqii found 43 percent of operators update hours only a few times a year. Nothing else measured in the report produced a larger swing than this one field.

## **Why does one field move the numbers this much?**

Two reasons, and only one of them is obvious. The obvious one is accuracy. Wrong hours cost you the guest standing outside at 10 p.m., reading that you closed at nine. That loss is invisible because nobody tells you they did not come in. The less obvious reason is freshness. Updating the field signals to the platform that the listing is actively managed, and actively managed listings surface more often. That is why the effect compounds with frequency rather than being a one time fix, and it is the same engagement loop we described in our [Google Maps guide](https://mychef.social/insights/google-maps-restaurant-marketing-nyc): more visibility produces more clicks, more clicks strengthen the signals, stronger signals produce more visibility.

## **What should a NYC restaurant actually do?**

Treat hours as a weekly task rather than a setup step. Six specific things carry most of the value.

- Set holiday hours before every event weekend and every public holiday, not on the day. October alone has Comic Con, Columbus Day, the Wine and Food Festival, Open House New York, and a Saturday Halloween.
- Enter any early open, late close, or kitchen close that differs from your listed hours. A kitchen closing at ten in a bar open until one are two different pieces of information to a hungry guest.
- Update the field even when nothing changed, by confirming it. Activity is part of the signal.
- Fix your hours everywhere else too, since Apple Maps, Yelp, OpenTable, and your own site are cross referenced and conflicting information lowers confidence in all of them.
- Add a few current photos while you are in there. Recent uploads read as active management.
- Put one person in charge of it with a recurring calendar reminder, because a task owned by everybody is owned by nobody.

## **How does this compare to paid advertising?**

It is not a replacement; it is the thing that has to work first. Paid traffic sent to a listing with wrong hours or a stale profile converts worse and costs the same. The order matters: fix the free channel that captures people already searching for food near them, then buy reach for the people who are not. The financial argument is straightforward. This work has no media cost, so every guest it produces improves rather than dilutes your margin. That is the same logic behind treating marketing as part of cost structure rather than a line item on top of it, which we set out in our [margin protection guide](https://mychef.social/insights/margin-protection-rising-food-costs-2026/).

## **Who is searching, and when?**

Local search decides two very different situations, and October brings both. The first is the visitor who does not know your block, which this month means convention attendees near Javits, festival crowds around the Seaport, and people walking self guided architecture tours through neighborhoods that rarely see visitors. The second is the person four blocks away deciding whether tonight is worth leaving the apartment for. Both are looking at the same listing. The visitor needs to know you are open and what you serve. The neighbor needs to know you are open and worth the walk. Neither will call to check. The event calendar that makes this urgent for the next four weeks is in our [October revenue map](https://mychef.social/insights/nyc-restaurant-marketing-calendar-2026/), and the weeknight version is in our piece on [Tuesday night revenue](https://mychef.social/insights/nyc-tuesday-night-off-peak-restaurant-revenue/).

## **What else did the report find worth acting on?**

Two findings sit alongside the hours result and are worth knowing now.

- Profile completeness compounds. Optimized profiles average four to five times the menu clicks, direction requests and website clicks of the most basic ones, and most of that gap can be closed with information you already have on hand.
- Review response is a capacity problem rather than a willingness problem. Marqii found 72 percent of operators believe they respond to 90 to 100 percent of reviews, while fewer than 30 percent of brands actually respond to at least half.

That second finding is uncomfortable and useful. Most operators are not neglecting reviews on purpose; they are losing track. A simple rule: every review answered within 48 hours by one named person closes the gap without new software.

## **Why conflicting information hurts more than missing information**

One detail worth understanding, because it explains why this work is never finished. Your hours exist in more places than Google: Apple Maps, Yelp, your reservation platform, your own website, delivery apps, and whichever directory scraped you three years ago. Those sources get cross referenced, and when they disagree, confidence in all of them drops. That means fixing Google alone produces less than fixing Google plus the two or three other places that actually carry traffic for you. It also means an old listing you forgot about can undermine a profile you maintain carefully. The practical version is a short audit once a quarter. Search your restaurant name, open the first five results that are not your own site, and check the hours and phone number on each. Most restaurants find at least one wrong entry, and fixing it costs nothing but the time to submit a correction.

## **Fifteen minutes a week**

This is the least interesting recommendation in restaurant marketing and one of the most reliable. Correct hours, current photos, a confirmed listing and answered reviews, maintained weekly by somebody whose job it is. The 2026 data says a restaurant doing that consistently is seen several times more often than one that set the profile up once and moved on. My Chef Social builds and maintains the local search systems that put NYC restaurants in front of guests who are already looking. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

### How much does updating Google hours actually affect restaurant visibility?

Marqii's 2026 report found locations that update hours at least once average 177 daily search views compared with 42 for locations that never do, and those in the top quartile of update activity average close to 300 daily views and 23 direction requests.

### How often should a restaurant update its Google Business Profile?

Weekly is the practical cadence, and hours should be set ahead of every holiday and major event weekend. Frequency itself is part of the ranking signal, so confirming the listing matters even when nothing has changed.

### Why do direction requests matter more than search views?

Because a direction request is much closer to a visit. Someone asking for walking directions has already decided where they are eating, while a view is only awareness.

### Is local search more valuable than paid ads for restaurants?

It is the channel that should be fixed first. Local search captures guests who are already looking for food nearby and carries no media cost, so paid advertising performs better once the listing is accurate and active.

### What else affects a restaurant's local search performance?

Profile completeness, which can multiply menu clicks and direction requests by four to five times, and review response consistency. Marqii found 72 percent of operators believe they answer almost all reviews while fewer than 30 percent of brands respond to at least half.

### Who should own this work in a restaurant?

One named person with a recurring weekly reminder. Listing maintenance shared across a team tends to stop happening, and the compounding benefit depends on consistency rather than effort.
